Role Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Firmware & Electronics R&D Engineer to join our R&D team in Athens. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to contribute to the design, testing, and development of new hardware solutions for our IoT ecosystem. You’ll work closely with senior engineers and product managers to prototype, validate, and refine electronic subsystems for new and existing devices. The role also involves providing 3rd-level technical support to other departments (e.g., Operations, Field Service, Sales) for issues related to R&D developments, assisting in diagnosing and resolving hardware or firmware problems. The candidate should also be open to occasional travel within Greece and abroad, based on project or support needs.
Responsibilities
Firmware Architecture & Development
- Design and implement firmware for microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M / nRF52 / ESP32 / SAMD21 / Quectel LTE Modules).
- Develop low-power, robust, and secure systems using bare-metal or RTOS architectures.
- Implement communication interfaces and protocols (UART, I2C, SPI, BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE-M/NB-IoT, MQTT, Modbus).
- Develop and manage secure bootloaders, OTA updates, firmware encryption, error logging.
Electronics & Hardware Design
- Design and review electronic schematics and PCB layouts (analog, digital, RF, power).
- Component selection based on reliability, availability, and performance.
- Prototype, test, and validate designs using lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with CE/RED, EMC, electrical safety, and EN 18031 cybersecurity standards.
Technical Leadership
- Mentor junior engineers and review hardware/firmware deliverables.
- Lead design reviews, promote engineering best practices, documentation, and version control.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operation, backend, mobile, and product teams.
Customer & R&D Collaboration
- Travel occasionally to meet customer R&D teams for integration, validation, and joint debugging.
- Provide expert-level technical support during installations, pilots, and field deployments.
- Investigate complex hardware/firmware interactions and connectivity issues on coffee machines
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, or Computer Engineering.
- 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware and electronic hardware development.
- Strong proficiency in C/C++ and real-time embedded systems.
- Practical experience with PCB design tools (Altium or KiCad).
- Solid understanding of analog/digital electronics, power supply design, EMI/ESD protection.
- Experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, and/or LTE-M/NB-IoT communication modules.
- Ability to read, understand, and implement communication protocol specifications/documents provided by coffee machine manufacturers.
- Ability to analyze and develop firmware based on protocol documentation, including custom serial protocols.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to investigate and resolve connection issues between our device and professional coffee machines.
- Comfortable using lab instruments (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, JTAG/SWD debuggers).
- Ability to travel occasionally to customer R&D facilities (Europe & international).
- Strong problem-solving skills, ownership mentality, fluent in English and Greek.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Nordic nRF52832, ESP32, SAMD21, STM32, or Quectel modules.
- Familiarity with FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or embedded Linux.
- Knowledge of secure boot, encryption (AES, ECDSA), firmware signing.
- Experience in CE/RED certification, EMC testing, and EN 18031 compliance.
- MQTT/IoT cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT, etc).
- Experience moving from prototype to mass manufacturing.
